Tables - one for each stage of life
Tables are an amazing event in our lives, and not just part of it. There is a table of almost all the stages crossed along the life path. Since the preschool years all the way through our golden age, a table seems to be something we can use and adapt to every situation particularly where we are at every stage.
It is amazing how the furniture industry for children has developed what may seem silly adaptation student's desk normal for children as young as 2 or 3. These are generally made of molded plastic and come in a myriad of bright colors. These young can learn to write and doodle and color in these desks. Some have bells and whistles and doo other parents joined them to delight and entertain young people more.
When the child grows a little more and go to school that is inserted into the wonderful world of private space is defined by its own desktop. It probably has at least one shelf where you can put your pencils and paper. I remember being tickled with the small desk in kindergarten. It's pretty basic, but it was mine.
As we get older we get into middle school and then high school. These tables were always a kind of disappointment to me. I liked the desk that had when I was a young student who had bookshelves and maybe even a top surface lift. The desks in high school were not really much more than a chair with the surface of a hinge attached. It always felt too small with barely enough space to put an open notebook and textbook to use. Going to College improves the situation somewhat. At least some of the classes have long rows of tables for students to use as desks instead of tables small little chair.
After college of desks seem to grow, like a kind of symbol status in our culture. Think big, executive, black walnut, fancy schmancy. These bad guys tell the world that man or woman behind it is great and is in charge. It is intimidating and help maintain social order. If you have a great big desk, then it must be important, right? I mean, look what workers humble in the office have to use. Hardly enough room to work. Then, once you are locked in his box with a divider or two rooms, definitely makes it a space restricted. This is far from the office of chiefs. I used to work for a guy whose office actually had enough space in it, not only for his enormous desk, but for a couple chairs and a conference table. It was close. Maybe it was more important after all. He thought anyway.
Old age brings a reducing all types of things. You see older people with yard sales and make efforts to establish other. They simply do not need all that stuff anymore. The desktops that use them tend to decline as well. Sale of large desks once used as part of his business life, and comes in a smaller, more practical option. These modules may even be as simple as a TV tray to which they are mounted bed.
No matter what stage of life where we are, desks are there to serve us faithfully.
