The "truth" about "false"!
From being a fan of modern design for about a decade, I have come across different perspectives on the issue of reproduction. Personally, I think if I had discretionary money, as if I had a net worth of over $ 1M, I would buy mostly original (unless you have small children). I met several designers and corporate executives of manufacturing companies design argue that the "license" are versions of the real investment to maintain and appreciate in value. They have argued, a little ridiculous I think if you can not pay the licensed version, then do not buy at all. What nonsense! Here's my take on the issue of investment.
If you has the cash available to pay $ 2,200 for a lamp of Arc could be a good investment. Or not. It is generally accepted to pay extra for a licensed copy ensure the value of the items and appreciation. There is no truth in this, but I would dig a little deeper because it is considered one of the main reasons to be "invested" in a copy of the license. It is true that the original will appreciate over time, however, at first, like a new car driven of luck, its value will decrease. In other words the same lamp you just bought for $ 2,200 ($ 2354 with 7% sales tax) if it is turned around and sold it on eBay, you might get $ 1700 for it. A loss of $ 654-a 27% loss, not a good investment. Fortunately, however, rises in value after that the initial fall at an approximate speed of inflation, all other factors such as supply and demand are equal. At 7% inflation rate, it would take more than 4 years to the point of balance on my investment. However, it would be the same inflation rate applied to any asset held in good condition and still as my demand playback Arco purchased for $ 499? "I did not realize the savings also been made in the same proportion in my IRA?
I have owned the reproductions have the same look and feel and get the same "ewws" and "ahhs" from friends and family for years. My "Nelson Bench is still 100 pounds with my plasma TV, my" Saarinen "marble table top is still the pleasure of myself and others as well to look at and eat, ebony finish is still on the base and the glass is still in one piece in my "table Noguchi coffee. My "Arco" Lighting lamp is still my workspace as I write this, not as much as I needed to change the bulb yet. The money I saved, combined with purchasing quality reproductions (several thousand dollars for my estimate) is still in my bank earning interest me instead of paying some top executive salary of companies (these designers are not around anymore).
It's a personal choice, but I wonder that most buyers feel really better to know that 7% of your $ 8000 couch was the actual material / work / advertising of products, while the other 93% was earmarked to pay Yacht licensee - all for the sake of loyalty? And if measurable differences between the license and the licensed products are marginal, (which in some cases, they probably are, not to mention cases where unlicensed versions Trump licensed versions), to what was then a buyer should make their loyalty? It's a fair question, at least in some cases.
Do not get me wrong, I sincerely appreciate your contribution, but today I am more worried about whether I will buy Phillips bulb what I'm looking at a price that if I like Thomas Edison continues to receive its share of revenues.
Sale "Unlicensed" plays out as "licensed". I personally despise the dishonest sellers proportional to the amount of damage that his lies can do. For example, if you purchase a "widget" in an electronics store and the guy told me that batteries are included, and come home and, I am not angry, but I will, maybe even shop in your store yet if decorum me. However, if a doctor says or leads I believe that surgery to relieve the pain in my knee after surgery, lameness and rehabilitation, still hurts, then I really feel betrayed and violated angry (sorry I'm a bit of topic). The point is that I personally do not condone any dishonest in this industry. Most people I know who have a mutual affinity towards MCM (mid-century modern), know all about reproduction for the licensed and unlicensed. I have tried every customer knew they were buying a reproduction. I suspect there are distributors who can sell out of counterfeits as the originals, but personally I think it is very clear line between the two. Besides the occasional dishonest banking forgeries as authentic presented is not the biggest problem of unauthorized reproduction:
Quality variation. The difference in quality with the unlicensed reproduction is undoubtedly an issue of considerable concern, as not all replicas are created equal. Therefore, the director of franchise is so successful "that always knows what you will get, even if it is a 2000 burger nutritionally empty calories or ridiculously overpriced cup of coffee or licensed by modern furniture. At least you know what you will get and can depend on it. People like that. When you purchase a license to reproduce, you know what they're going to get, at least most of the time. I have come to find that there are reproductions of good and poor and There are unscrupulous sellers and people with integrity and service of decent knowledge. I found reproductions of an "egg" chair upholstery which begun to detach himself. Other items may be somewhat unbalanced and biased, the measurements are off, the quality of material options are poor, the steel oxidized, the tears of fabric, plywood shows saw marks on the wood. I have seen some that virtually unidentifiable from the original and held at that for many years to come. In my opinion, is of vital importance when considering the purchase of an unlicensed reproduction of a license is more carefully inspected personally (or a friend in the industry, not the salesperson who calls himself your friend either) the quality of the stitching, the symmetry of the lines of 360 degrees, the quality steel, materials used, the reputation of the banks (you should always check the betterbusinessbureau.com of complaints), to name a few.
