Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK DVD Recorder
The Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK ($ 330 Buy now) can be thought of as a digital video Swiss Army knife. It has an ATSC tuner, DVD recording capability, VHS Playback and dubbing, and its conversion up a DVD player (up to 1080p via HDMI) to boot. So with all this capability we were excited when the unit was made in home offices HT boys. On paper, this device was too good to be true. So how will fare in the real world?
ATSC tuner
The unit comes with an ATSC tuner that will make your current TV analog ready for cutting. That is, if the air is how you are getting to its current television signals. Most likely its not its still nice to know that you can record digital signals in their beautiful pristine quality. However, while the player is able to collect the digital HDTV signal which has no way to record in 720p or 1080i. But what you get is a very clean 480p (DVD quality) of the signal recorded on a DVD. One area of disappointment if is that if you want this device to act as a source of high definition for HD Ready TV is out of luck. The player does not pass a HD signal through television. We thought it was odd that the ATSC tuner is not compatible with an electronic program guide. Although the interface is easy to use, makes the creation of recordings from a bit more like the old VCR. You never know you recorded what you want until it appears on the screen.
Playing DVD (upconverting performance)
Image was assessed with objective and subjective tests. For the objective tests using the Silicon Optix HQV DVD. We player connected to our Mitsubishi WD-65831 and set the player to output 1080p through the HDMI cable. It was found that the player did a great job with the test of the color bar and a decent job with jaggies. The test assesses the ability of jaggies players deal with moving objects. Detail Enhancement, reduction noise and motion adaptive tests were a bit difficult for this player, but he did a great job with 3:2 detection. In general, the DMR-EZ47VK is a player decent DVD upconversion. Definitely an improvement over standard DVD player.
Since the HQV disc is built to highlight the ability of DVD players also wanted to look at how this player performed with regular movies. Here we come to our old standbys, Blackhawk Down Spiderman 2 Superbit. The player did a great job with these films. The night vision scenes look not appear grainy and detail was very visible in dark scenes. Spiderman 2 was incredible! We can not wait for Spiderman 3. Digital Audio, Dolby Digital and DTS, are transmitted via the HDMI cable. So I brought a cable video and audio to the receiver. The entire chain (DLP from Mitsubishi, Panasonic DVD Recorder and Aperion speakers) looked and sounded fantastic. We forget that the player was a DVD recorder with upconversion capability. Overall, we were very happy with DVD playback in Panasonic SC.
VHS Playback and Dubbing
If you have old video cases of children who scored and are looking for a way to transfer and stored in a digital format, then this product if for you. Saving your child's school work to future generations is as simple as inserting the tape Video and DVD-R and touching a single button. This also works for copying DVD to a blank VHS tape. You still can find in stores 
? The recorder supports almost all formats of recordable discs such as dual-layer discs.
DVD Recording
The player has four recording modes that come with a good mixture of the capacity of quality considerations. The highest quality mode (XP) can record an hour of video in a single layer disc. The longest record is achieved in EP mode with up to 8 hours of recording. Dual-layer discs are compatible and almost double these values. The unit also supports SP and LP modes. All recordings can be viewed in the player through a "Recordings" menu item that has a thumbnail interface with the movement. To view your recordings on a DVD player standard disk needs to be finalized, which may take up to fifteen minutes. Something to consider when playing a widescreen recording on the DMR-EZ47VK is the image shown in the proper aspect ratio. But when played back on another DVD player picture upconversion is crushed to an aspect ratio of 4:3. Then would need to adjust the TV settings to stretch the image back to 16:9.
Video quality is a function of recording mode. In the game mode longer (PE) the quality is quite degraded as compared to XP. Recorded HD was fine, but it was easy to see that the picture was not HD. If you are used to see high definition, you will see a definite loss of quality in what you are used to seeing. That said, the digital image was better than any SD picture occurring. Dubbed VHS tapes looked as good as one could consider the source.
Other considerations
The player has an SD slot, but his only good for viewing pictures. The DVD player supports DIVX. From the Panasonic website: Official DivX Certified product. Plays all versions of DivX video (including DivX6) with standard playback of DivX media files. The player will also playback CD Audio and MP3. Finally, the unit is compatible with EZ Sync HDAVI Control so you can connect your DVD player to the Panasonic components and control with the touch of your remote. The last thing we want to cover is the menu system and remote control. The menu system is somewhat complex and not intuitive to traverse. The remote control buttons is assigned and you really had to find the buttons you need. But its understandable when you consider how this product, many do not. Just wanted to point out that it will take some time to familiarize yourself with the player with him to get the most out of it.
