Projectors aspect ratio, and comparison of plasma and LCD projectors?

I want a projector mainly for video games and movies but every time I look at the cards say (aspect ratio 4:3 / 16:9) How is it possible that I found a projection screen should be like a TV with a fixed aspect ratio, an LCD 42, for example, has a rectangular screen, is better suited to 16:9, but can accept images in 4:3 But she have mailboxes on both sides is the same true for projectors and projector how to have a 4:3 and 16:9, thanks for your help?

The projector has a relationship aspect of "native" (16:9 or 4:3), but will provide the "other" as a sub-format (with black bars above and below or side). The program image resolution is defined, and any subset (for example 4:3 in a 16:9 or 16:9 on a 4:3 screen) does not use all the available resolutions. For example, a 4:3 image on a 16:9 projector only use part of the width of the screen while the vertical resolution (eg 480, 720 or 1080) is used, the resolution is not horizontal. Similarly, a 16:9 image on a 4:3 projector can use any horizontal resolution, but only part of the vertical rest (the black is full). Note that this ability to treat a different aspect ratio is similar to the ability of the projector to expand the input signals to match the native resolution projector. For example, a projector can accept a 720p signal to 480 or 1080 and fill the screen by expanding the input up or down, respectively. As a final note, besides the aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1) or 4:3 (1.33:1) - as 1.85:1, 2.05:1, 2.35:1 or 2.55:1 - must also be driven by high definition projectors (o), because it is the common aspect of films.
